World Interiors Day 2011

Probably the next wave of one of the most crucial dates to be marked down on the calendar by the interior designers and architects is the recognized World Interiors Day. This global event is honorably marked down by the International Federation of Interior Architect/ Designers (IFI) on the last weekend of May each year.

World Interiors Day (WID) is an annual global event, spearheaded by IFI, and designed to bring Interior Architecture/Design into the spotlight. WID draws the attention of the public; enhances knowledge and understanding of the discipline; encourages cooperation between professionals; and showcases their contribution to the betterment of society.

Being fresh and excited to bring World Interiors Day to the celebration, KBU International College School of Design is proud to take charge of volunteering to organize an event specifically to the design students before they are off to their summer break. Hosted by Interior Architecture and Design Club of KBU International College (KBUIAD) on 31 May 2011, the event was leaded by President Joan Khor alongside with 12 committees with  additional few others second year students and guided by few lecturers in-charge. The number of attendees were approximately 200 students with teams and volunteers from each respective batch of degree and diploma.


The highlights of the day is as below
1.    Opening ceremony (Welcome speech by the president of Malaysia Society of Interior Design (MSID), Mr. Mohammad Faizal Ghazali) and momento giving by Ms. Tan Sin Ai.
2.    Experience Sharing by international students, past/graduated students and Thinklab representative, Muhammad Razif Nasruddin.
3.    Design Talk by Dicky Ong and Ms. Min Law (representative from Bristol)
4.    Amazing race competition
5.    Installation of furniture and lighting
6.    Drama and Talent Show










The most anticipated day kicked start as early as 930 a.m on the Tuesday morning with registration procedure and opening ceremony. Not to forget to express the biggest appreciation to the President of MSID for his inspiring speech followed by supportive kick start encouragement from Ms. Tan Sin Ai.

The first two speakers of the experience sharing agenda of that particular morning bliss were given by two of the final year international student Marwa and Sharzad from Iran. This followed by experience sharing from a special guest, the founder of Thinklab Muhammad Razif Nasruddin who is too a former lecturer of KBU International College. Mr. Razif highlighted the importance of designers of generation nowadays by relating to the social and cultural diversities and his purpose to uphold Thinklab, a research based design conference association. Last but not least, this followed by another informative sharing from a graduated student, Ng Foong Wai of her speech about her past and current working experiences, directions and challenges along way after graduated with the first class honours from KBU International College with recognition from twinning university of Nottingham Trend, United Kingdom.


The morning speeches were carried on by a design talk by Mr. Dicky Ong and Ms. Min Law the representative from Bristol. Appreciation too was addressed to Bristol of being supportive by organizing and sponsoring a furniture competition with attractive prizes to be grabbed. This indeed has given a huge opportunity and platform to students to show off their creativity and innovation ideas to manipulate office furniture to a better living.









After the long morning of talks and speeches, the event hyped up with outdoor activities; the amazing race. Inspired by popular reality television series, amazing race consisted of 9 stations marked down all around Bandar Utama. In total of 6 teams with 5 members in each team took part in this race. The race was nerve-wreaking and challenging as each group would need to battle against other groups within the given time frame with task to be accomplished in each station. Whilst the must have furniture/lighting installation was participated by 3 teams who had fun boasting off their creativity and bringing new design approach for being green.

Towards the end of the afternoon, students were once again gathered in the lecture hall for the talent and performance agenda before the result announcement of the category.  The performances were indeed stunning and entertaining. It started off with musical instrument performance striding through the entire hall with ascertain of relaxing and chilling late afternoon. Additionally, the next two groups presented their talent through singing and acting. The last performance was a drama and stage performance from the final year students. Indeed the hilarious acting and voice mimicking were entertaining and never fail to crack off all the audiences with big loud of applause.


To sum up the day, results of each competition were announced. Prizes were given out and that has made the whole World Interiors Day to its utmost success.
