World Interior Day 2024 with RiaKL

 


On 10 July 2024, the Faculty of Design and Built Environment at First City University College celebrated World Interior Day 2024 by bringing together Diploma in Interior Design and BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design students along with their lecturers for a day dedicated to exploration and learning. The event took place at the Student's Lounge.


The day began with an engaging talk by Rex from Ria KL Design Studio, who provided a detailed exploration of the design dialogue, from concept to creation. They shared very practical application on how concept ideas being applied to the design, and showcasing an actual project by the firm. Following the talk, participants took part in a Q&A session that allowed them to delve deeper into the topics discussed.


The day continued with a workshop lead by Min from RiaKL, where attendees applied their knowledge in practical scenarios. The workshop featured a spirited competition, with Group 8 emerging as the Champion. Members of the group included, Joey Tee Jie Ying, Lai Zhi Qing, Goh Ming Ngo, Teh Ying Xuan, Nicholas Loh Jie Kit, Lee Wei Yan, Ting Teng Yung, Lai Choong Yan, and Sam Kian Mun.




Chin Wei Qi, President of the IAD Club, expressed his enthusiasm about the event, stating, "The event was truly inspiring and fruitful. It highlighted the strong connections between alumni, seniors, juniors, and lecturers, and effectively bridged the gap between professionals and students through shared experiences, hands-on workshops, and insightful feedback sessions."
Teh Ying Xuan, a final year student echoed this sentiment by adding, "The session with Mr. Rex was incredibly insightful and beneficial for my design skills and current assignment. His innovative use of materials and striking contrasts between bright and dark colours were particularly inspiring."
Overall, the World Interior Day 2024 was a remarkable event that highlighted the talent and creativity of the Interior Design students, setting a high standard for future events.


World Interior Day 2023 "Sustainability, Design and Beauty"

The faculty members and students of the Faculty of Design & Built Environment (FDBE) gathered to celebrate World Interiors Day on 31 May 2023. The celebration, with the theme "Sustainability, Design & Beauty", was coordinated by the Interior Architecture and Design (IAD) Club of the faculty.
As part of the celebration, the IAD Club extended invitations to two distinguished architects, Ar Alan Teh and Ar Kevin Mark Low, known for their exceptional knowledge and accomplishments in sustainable design. They were invited to share their insights and expertise on the subject of "Sustainability, Design & Beauty" through engaging presentations and talks.

The celebration also feature an Eco Bazaar, a vibrant marketplace showcasing a wide array of sustainable and eco-friendly products. The students put their creative skills and knowledge of interior design and architecture to work, transforming the South Foyer into a vibrant and eco-friendly marketplace. The space was curated to showcase the principles of sustainable design, incorporating elements such as natural lighting, recycled materials, and biophilic design features.




To add an extra element of excitement, the Eco Bazaar featured a competition called the Eco Bazaar Design Competition. This competition aimed to recognize and celebrate the stalls with the most innovative and visually appealing designs and displays.

World Interior Day 2023/ Eco Bazaar


World Interior Day 2022

 

World Interior Day 2022 is an annual event that is organised by the IAD Club of First City University College (FCUC) on 31st May 2022 at FCUC campus. This year we are honour to have two representatives from Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), IDR Sharifah Suzana Simmonds and Associate Prof. IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain. Director of First City University College, Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang, Vice Chansellor of First City University College, Prof Dr Saw Sor Heoh, Registrar, Mr Lye Boon Han, Head of Student Services, Ms Teoh Seok Kean, Acting Dean of Faculty of Design & Built Environment, Assist Prof Chua Huwi Huwi, respective Heads of Departments, lecturers, and students to join this event. This event has been separated to few days as there is an art installation competition take place. The theme of World Interior Day 2022 is ‘Pride of the Past, an Incentive for the Future’.

After launching gimmick session, IDR Sharifah Suzana Simmonds, Associate Prof. IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain and Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Teo Chiang Liang are invited to respective installation for the judging session. There are 6 group that included 1 lecturer and students of IAD Club FCUC. Representative from each group is going to explain their concept of their art installation to the judges. These are the group that involve in retrospective 3D installation competition on World Interior Day 2022:

After judging session, Associate Prof. IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain is invited to the stage and give feedback for retrospective 3D installation. Then, there are 3 groups of winners are selected from the retrospective 3D installation which are 1st prize winner ‘Verna Vive’, 2nd prize winner ‘Shadow of the Past’ and 3rd prize winner ‘Paper Cranes’.

Here’s another highlight of this event. Our IADians had recently participated in the BU9 Roundabout Competition organised by Bandar Utama Development Sdn. Bhd. This is an open competition that aims to benefit the Bandar Community Architect. One of the judges of the BU9 Roundabout Competition, Mr Loh Tian Hong has joined us to present the certificate and RM 100 voucher to the finalist while Tan Sri Teo Chiang Kok is invited to this event and present the grand prize that worth RM 5000 cash to the winner which is Tan Jia Xin from year 2 of BA (Hons) Interior Architecture and Design.





Dean of Faculty of Design & Built Environment, Assist Prof Chua Huwi Huwi present the token of appreciation to our honoured MIID representative, IDr Sharifah Suzana Simmonds and Associate Prof. IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain.


This annual event is indeed a precious event for us students as this is the first time having all level of student participating in one project as we get to mingle and getting to know more new faces in person than what we had been practicing behind the screen during pandemic. 

Indeed, we learnt from our experience in our past and we are all rather appreciating the moment and time spent together in WID2022.

WID 2021: DESIGN AS A GLOBAL

 WORLD INTERIOR DAY 2021: DESIGN AS A GLOBAL CONVERSATION

Despite Malaysia's movement control order (MCO), we still upholding on the World Interior Day event. This year, we have held it online through ZOOMwith inclusive content of live sketch and rendering by Dr Mohamed Nizam, a senior lecturer in Interior Design and a talk by one of MIID council member, Assoc Prof IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain with a broad range of expertise.

            The session has been divided into two parts, first part is the talk conducted by Dr Mohamed Nizam about live sketch and rendering. During the sharing session, he has mentioned about the lack of hand sketching during concept and development stage for design students. Therefore, he had shared to us how to produce a hand sketch of one-point and two-point perspective, and the skills to make an idea sheets to be more interacting and attractive. As an example, he also explained to us what are the different of one and two point perspectives. Such as, adding in figure to present our ideas better in term of user experience.

Other than that, he also shared with us some applications to go for digital sketching during this pandemic period whereby all the students are now having online classes. Application such as Procreate and Sketchbook, allow students to play with line thickness, materials, human figures, also practice sketching skills by tracing on an existing image.

Meanwhile, the second part of the session is conducted by MIID council member, Assoc Prof IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain. As an experienced interior designer, Mr. Zani has shared with us the roles and responsibilities as a designer, the job scope we will meet in the future, giving the students opportunity to have knowledge and understanding on the industry situations. Other than design, he also mentioned we should look into how to benefits community's lifestyle especially in new social norm or lifestyle, designers have to rethink traditional workflows to aid the community to stay connected in view of self-imposed and mandated social distancing.

 

 

 

       To let students have better understanding, he also showed some examples of new norm space design – such as introducing natural light into the space, create personal space in public area which meet the needs of human and comfortable to use (besides aesthetic). In addition, he also stated nowadays interior designer shall emphasize on engagement, inclusive and collaboration elements when designing a space or project.


Mr. Zani also shared how to register for MIID membership.

Last but not least, during the end of the sharing session, Mr. Zani also shared generously with us regarding the roles of MIID, and the ways to register for MIID membership & route to become a registered professional interior designer.

 


Gladfully every student is willing to join the session, and not hesitate to ask questions during the talk. Once again, thank you to Dr Mohamed Nizam and Assoc Prof IDr Mohammad Zani Mohammad Zain for accepting our invitation and have a great sharing session will FCUC IAD students!

 

Last but not least, we have organized a sketching competition for students to allow them apply the knowledge and techniques onto their sketch, lets have a look on their sketches!
