Kolam Design Competition @ Viva Home 2012

The festival of lights is just around the corner and this year, Viva Home has organized a Kolam Design Competition where our college's team representative ; team Vanakam had been shortlisted to realize their kolam design.

Team Vanakam has brought a unique twist to their interpretation of a kolam.
Rather than using colored  rice in realizing their kolam, the girls decided to use stones that are dyed in tempera paste and strips of color paper.
This combination of the traditional and quilled kolam (made out of craft paper) is really an innovative and creative idea!

Rock, paper , kolam?
From 2D to reality
Quilled kolam.
Finished 'hybrid' kolam
So for those who are interested in voting for KBU's team Vanakam,
You can cast your vote at Viva home but that is only if you have spent RM100 and above or
Just morally support them by visiting their kolam! (:
Do check it out!!
Their competition results will be out this Monday so fingers crossed and best of luck girls!
In the meantime,

Happy Deepavali and happy holidays to all you IADians out there!

The Result....

We won ourselves Honorary Mention prize worth RM300!!! Not bad though.

October talks!

Hey, all! It's already November ; time sure flies doesn't it?
We'll here's a recap of some talks us IADians participated during the month of October

7th October 2012 : Nooks & Crannies Become Architecture

The talk was presented by Sir Peter Cook himself ; the founder of Archigram where he shares his unwavering passion for architecture ; his journey and also his take on technology and nature itself.

Together he explains his conceptual attempt on his design while guiding us on how he had come to his design epiphany where he tries to tie the modernity of the world today with the order of the existing nature.
The power to decipher and extract the existing elements in his surrounding and adapting it to his conceptual idea is really admirable.

Peter Cook kept us entertained by embedding his personality into his speech ; he's quite a firecracker himself! A very lively and witty presenter if I must say so myself.

17th October 2012: Exclusive talk by Jamie Durie

Organized by Dulux ; one of the sponsors of the design TV series "The Apartment ; Style Edition" invited Jamie Durie; one of the judges of the TV series to give us fresh designers an insight on interior and landscape design

Jamie's design philosophy revolves mainly around how to bring the outdoors in as he merge the two elements into his interior designs.
The versatility of his design is eye opening as it creates a space of duality in terms of function and ambiance.
Not only that, he highlights to how we should lure users with 'magnets' where one does not give away the full story of the space; helps create the suspense in a transitional space.

Did I mention he's good with students?

Here's a picture of us IADians with him

KBU IADians with Jamie Durie!

Parallel with IFI this year theme, we hope to bring back all the glorified moment throughout all of the Students Saturday program of the past organized by MSID into the Newly renewed MIID first students program. Thus; in line with the theme, 6 BELAS SUPER INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS SATURDAY 2012 seeks to challenge the creative minds of student to produce possible solutions based the task given.

To move forward, we must first look at the past. To understand and learn from glorious past but not to dwell. As what Robert L.Peters said “Design creates culture. Just look at the crowd!!

A fresh tone of turquoise on KBU IAD club t-shirts had edified the event.
10.00am, the event was officiated with speech by IAD club president and vice-president, Wong Kin Bing and Chiang Siew Leng respectively. Together, they had shared the joy and excitement relished by happening event throughout the year. The president also announced that the club managed to get a full support and sponsor from a furniture manufacturer, Artmatrix Sdn Bhd for this event. Thank you so much Artmtrix! (http://www.artmatrix.com.my).

Fully sponsored by Artmatrix!
World Interior Day ; an introductory by emcee Vicky.
Mr. President and Ms. Vice President at the
podium with their opening speech for the event.
10.30am, ice-breaking game, a presentation competition within divided groups was held. Students were sited into their respective groups according. A thorough brief was presented by IAD club event committee.

Kay Chong heading and explain the game event.

Each group was given a topic, where they are to indicate a variety of presentation technique to sell their topics and present it on stage and the competition was judged by lecturer Ms. Chua Huwi Huwi, Mr. Leong and Mr. Dickie Ong.

It really was an event that tried to push the creative limits of the students as they’re only given a few options to promote it for instance by acting or singing it out or presenting it as humorous as possible in proper English or in Singlish.

Students: No way!!!!
Lucky draw? Nope, choosing topics to present for the game.
The students making use of what was given; sheet of mahjong paper, a pair of scissors
And a bottle of glue. What exactly CAN’T you do?.
This team was supposed to promote a red chair.

Two different kinds of red chairs. Can you see it?

So what are the verdicts, judges?

But as the clock strikes 12pm, our empty stomachs decided to have a performance of their own as well, an orchestral musical symphony. Lucky for us, Domino’s Pizza lunch was provided as a sponsorship by Artmatrix. So much YUM!!

Students munching away to the scrumptious Italian bread.
Don’t forget the lecturers too!
As our hearts filled with laughter and stomachs filled with so delicious food, after lunch, Young Designer Award 2012 by Nippon Paint was briefed to students by Nippon Paint event team. For more information about the competition, kindly visit their website at http://www.youngdesigneraward.com.my !

The students as they listen tentatively to the briefing.
I see a number of potential participants!
And of course, a little something to catch sleeping students; Q&A!
What’s Q&A without a little trinket of memory, no?
If you answer the question correctly, you’ll win this really handsome mascot here.

Such a charmer, not to mention a natural poser!

Next, prizes were given to the ice-breaking game winning team.
The World Interior Day @ KBU International College was enclosed by an Annual General Meeting, AGM where a new team of committee was elected.

3RD place winners ; to promote a yellow chair through beat boxing.

Runner ups ; who promoted a white bookshelf through acting
1st price winner! Promoted grey curtains through acting.
Congratulations to all!

And of course, a little token of appreciation to lecturers who had to judge our performance.

Thank you lecturers!
And that marks the end of World Interior Day of 2012
The end of the 2011/2012’s committee‘s legacy that we the 2012/2013 committee has to carry forth in the upcoming years.

“We’ll work hard together,” says Chiang Siew Leng; President for the 2012/2013 committee and I’m sure we will in future!

And a huge thank you shout out to Artmatrix for their sponsorship and making the event a successful one! THANK YOU ARTMATRIX!!
